HELPING CALVES GROW

Calf Notes began in the 1990s at the University of Tennessee, where Jim Quigley served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science. As part of his research in dairy management, he participated in a multi-state research and outreach program focused on improving efficiency and management in the rapidly evolving dairy industry.

During this time, the dairy industry was undergoing significant change. Herds were becoming larger, milk production per cow was increasing, and specialized calf-rearing operations were emerging. These changes created a growing need for practical, science-based information to help producers adapt and improve calf management.

At the same time, the early internet offered a new way to share information. In 1997, Jim began writing articles on calf nutrition and management for online distribution. These articles became Calf Notes.

Since then, Calf Notes has grown into a widely used resource for producers, veterinarians, nutritionists, and advisors around the world. What began as a simple effort to share knowledge has evolved into a global platform, with translations in Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian, making calf care information accessible to a broader audience.

Calf Notes exists to provide clear, science-based information to help caregivers make better decisions and improve the lives of young calves.
